What Causes the MINI Cooper Check Engine Light to Turn On?
There are many reasons why the check engine light in your MINI Cooper will turn on. While it could be something as simple as a loose gas cap, you should note that what seems to be a minor problem now can develop into a much bigger and more costly issue over time. For your own safety and to ensure that you don’t experience a breakdown when you’re on the road outside Minneapolis, you should bring the vehicle into our Service Center as soon as you can. Some of the most common things that can trip your check engine light include:
- Gas Cap: A loose, broken, or missing gas cap issue reduces fuel pressure and allows fuel vapors to escape, reducing fuel economy and increasing harmful emissions.
- Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires: Spark plugs and spark plug wires will need to be replaced over time. If the spark plugs are fouled it can cause your engine to misfire, which negatively impacts fuel economy, and performance, and can even prevent the vehicle from running altogether.
- Catalytic Converter: If the catalytic converter is clogged or malfunctioning it can severely impact fuel economy and vehicle performance.
- Oxygen Sensor: The oxygen sensor helps to maintain the correct air-fuel mixture within the engine. If the oxygen sensor goes bad, it can cause your vehicle’s computer to supply the engine with too much or too little fuel. If the engine doesn’t get enough fuel it is at risk of total failure. If the engine gets too much fuel, it will emit excessive smoke.
- Mass Air Flow Sensor: Similar to the oxygen sensor, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine to help ensure the proper air-fuel mixture. A faulty MAF sensor can cause the engine to misfire, resulting in poor fuel economy, impaired performance, and potentially more unnecessary damage to your engine.
Steps on How to Reset a Check Engine Light
When the check engine light comes on in your MINI, we strongly recommend that you visit our Service Center and have one of our experienced technicians diagnose exactly what the problem is and make the necessary repairs. If you have access to an OBD-II scanner or have otherwise resolved the issue on your own and the light remains on, you can manually reset the check engine light by following these steps:
- Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves.
- Locate the negative terminal on your car battery. It will most often have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. The positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
- Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench and pull the negative connector away from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with your wrench.
This should reset the check engine light. If it doesn’t, bring your vehicle to our Service Center, and have our service techs reset it for you. Please note that disconnecting or replacing your battery may also require you to reset other in-car electronics, such as your infotainment system.
